Android 10 High-Urgency Override System Volume Not Working

Yes! It seems to work for me as well on my Galaxy S8, app version 5.94.1 (8385).

The volume gets set, but it seems that after opening the app (or after a short period of time), the app sets the phone volume back to mute. This is wonderful! Thank you guys for fixing this.

Can confirm that this is now working on my Galaxy S9+.

Unfortunately, Samsung (and others) don’t always implement Android system stuff exactly the same way. This was one of those cases. It took us a few tries to find a way to make everything work on Samsungs as well as the standard stock Android.

We’re sorry about the delay. It’s been a top priority for our team.

Thanks, Sarah! Appreciate you getting the fix for this bug prioritized.

I updated to the latest version 5.95 (8419) and was eventually able to get everything working.

It took finding the comment from Jeff Smelser back on Apr 7.

I too am running PagerDuty in a work profile and I had to install PagerDuty under my regular profile to get the volume override to work for notifications. I just had to install it, no need to configure anything. I was unable to grant permissions to the PagerDuty app for access to DND until I did this.

It’s an acceptable workaround for now but something that I believe should be fixed as we shouldn’t have to install the app in both profiles to get it to work. That defeats the whole purpose of having a work profile.
Thanks for all your hard work to resolve this issue.

Hi Brian,

Unfortunately neither PagerDuty nor any other third party app downloaded in an Android Work Profile is able to access and bypass Do Not Disturb. This is a limitation set by Android that we’re unable to directly workaround or fix from our end at this time, so I’m afraid we wouldn’t be able to be improve this until the circumstances around these environments are different.

It does sound like you and Jeff may have discovered a workaround to get around this though, if you were able to enable DND for the app installed in the work profile by also installing the app in your personal profiles. If that had allowed you to bypass DND for the push notifications emanating from the app you’re only logged into in your work profile, that is very cool. I will circulate that as a potential workaround that customers can try who are hoping to get around this limitation of work profiles.

Thank you for informing us of this workaround

I’m having this same issue on an LG V40 ThinQ with android 10 running PD app ver 5.98(8816)

If I have the phone on silent the High-Urgency Override System Volume does not appear to function. The only way I get an audible noise is if I have the ringtone volume up regardless of if DND is enabled or not

I"ve tried several combination of settings and reinstalling the app with out any success

Hi Michael! Sorry to hear you’re running into an issue, we’re happy to look into this. Can you send us an email at support@pagerduty.com so we can assist with troubleshooting?

Same problem here with OnePlus 7 Pro and app version 5.101.2(9253)
It say unsupported for this device and is greyed out. I removed work profile for Teams but no success.
Please help i missed two calls this week.

I experienced this problem today and missed an alert on Pixel 4a with Android 10. Please help and keep me posted!

Same issue :frowning:
App Version: 5.102(9381)
Huawei P8 Lite
Android: 8.0.0

I receive notifications, but no sound. Not even the tests in the app under troubleshooting make any sound

EDIT: Seems like this is a Huawei EMUI issue. I tried everything. But even Whatsapp, and other apps displayed the same issue. In the end I just got a new phone. The phone that showed the issue was old anyways.

Since the new phone, everything works as expected

I’m on a Pixel 4a 5G android 11, app v 6.04.1, and I experienced something like this.

I found that if I have it setup to immediately call me for high urgency notifications, pagerduty will override silent mode.
If you have it call any other time than immediately (such as after 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc), it will use the system volume, which I think it a bug.
Pagerduty should be able to override the system volume at any point during a high urgency notification.

I Have the same issue on a Huawei P30 pro.

Alright, I’ve been testing this as well, as I had inconsistent issues - I’ll just ping the last PD employee that really took a look at this issue and reported on it: @SarahChandler

Phone: Samsung Galaxy S20 5G
One UI: 3.1
Android: 11
PD app version: 6.53.1 (12039)

For all tests, I have PD set up on my work profile. However, I also have it downloaded on my personal profile, but it’s not set up in any way.
The PD contact is also favourited/starred on the work profile, and “Automatic Contact Card Management” is enabled.
Additionally, the PD app “HU Override System Volume” & “HU override Do Not Disturb” settings are both enabled.

For each test, I’m manually creating a new high urgency incident, and leaving the phone untouched until the first phone call should be made.

Baseline - Sound at lowest volume & DND off
This is the base use-case where sound should always work, given the phone has sound enabled.

  • System volume on sound & vibrate;
  • Volume at lowest non-zero value;
  • Do Not Disturb mode disabled;
  • Notify app immediately;
  • First call to personal & work phone after 1 minute.

As expected, PD & calls worked fine this way.
This of course makes sense, since sounds are on globally for the whole phone. If PD didn’t work in this situation, I’d be very concerned.
Still, it is important to set a baseline, and confirm it indeed works as we expect it to. :smile:

#1 - Desired use-case: Vibrate & scheduled DND turned off during most hours
This is how I want PD to work on my phone, and these parameters will be the base of the rest of my tests.

  • System volume on vibrate only;
  • Volume at 0;
  • Do Not Disturb mode disabled (scheduled to turn on at night, however);
  • Notify app immediately;
  • First call to personal & work phone after 1 minute.

This did not work as expected.
The PD App notification correctly caused the phone to vibrate + make a sound.
However, the phone call only caused the phone to vibrate.

#2 - Vibrate & Do Not Disturb enabled

  • System volume on vibrate only;
  • Volume at 0;
  • Do Not Disturb mode enabled;
  • Notify app immediately;
  • First call to personal & work phone after 1 minute.

This worked as expected.
The PD App notification triggered both vibration and a sound.
The phone call also caused the phone to vibrate, and the ringtone to be played.

#3 - @max.2 's solution, with a phone call immediately being made, Vibrate & DND off

  • System volume on vibrate only;
  • Volume at 0;
  • Do Not Disturb mode disabled;
  • Notify app immediately;
  • First call to personal & work phone *immediately.

This did not work for me, unlike what @max.2 reported.
Notification did vibrate + make sound.
Call only vibrated, just like before.

#4 - @max.2 's solution, with a phone call immediately being made, Vibrate & DND on

  • System volume on vibrate only;
  • Volume at 0;
  • Do Not Disturb mode enabled;
  • Notify app immediately;
  • First call to personal & work phone *immediately.

Test successful, just like #2.
PD App notification vibrated + made a sound.
PD phone call vibrated + made a sound too.
So once again, DND seems to have to be on, and the time when the call is made does not matter.

Conclusion
It seems that DND mode is the key to the issue here. With this (limited) testing it is clear that the “HU System Volume Override” setting only works if the phone is also in DND mode.
Oddly enough, PD App notifications always make sounds just fine, regardless of if DND is on or not. Thus it seems this is an issue moreso related to starred contacts/phone call ringtones in general, rather than notifications overall.

The fix proposed by @max.2 did not work for me, and without DND enabled, this “immediate-call” approach still did not work for me to create sound. So once again, DND mode having to be enabled for system volume override to work seems to be the problem at hand.

Retrospect
As stated in the desired use-case, I now run my phone on a schedule, to turn DND mode on during the night, because of this exact problem with PD. However, eventually, I just want DND mode turned off fully again. It’s simply a compromise I’m willing to live with for now, so I at least get woken up at night if a HU alert comes in.
DND seems to have to be enabled in order for PD’s calls to make a sound if the phone is in silent or vibrate-only mode.

However, during the day, I don’t want DND mode turned on, so this still results in calls only vibrating during the day (as I do want my phone to run in vibrate-only). Of course, I’m more likely to notice the vibration during the day, when I’m awake, but this is still very problematic.

I don’t want to be required to run my phone with DND turned on or with the volume turned on during the day, to fix thus.
I simply want my phone on vibrate-only during the day, and only have PD’s app & calls to override the volume and make a sound, so that all other notifications (e.g. chat messengers) & calls on my phone stay silent and just vibrate.

I hope my tests and reporting can help the PD team to pinpoint the problem and resolve it. This issue has been running for much over a year now, and although I understand this probably has to do with a lot of possible brand + android version combinations, I do see this as a very urgent thing to fix.

Facing the same issue with my Samsung Note 8. I restarted the phone but still facing the issue. Then i checked this https://geniusgeeks.com/volume-automatically-goes-down-android/ guide and finally managed to fix the issue.

If your Android phone automatically goes to Silent Mode, simply remove any “scheduled Do not disturb” settings on your Android device.

I still have the same issue mentioned in the thread – calls do not trigger sound, even though “High-Urgency Override System Volume” is true in the settings. I’m on a Pixel 7. The issue is only for calls, not notifications.

This is extremely HIGH PRIORITY to me, since it will cause me to miss a page.

I can tell you what worked for me, what i did was this enabled vibration when the phone rings.

I searched on every forum on internet and eventually end up fixing this by enabling the call waiting feature.
